Gundam

Nearly fifty years, ~30 series, and the best pure-timeline material in anime — because Gundam doesn't organize itself by seasons. It organizes itself by calendars: whole alternate eras, each with its own dating system, its own war, and its own Gundam. And in 1999 the franchise pulled the ultimate move: a series claiming every calendar is the same world's buried past.

Each band is a calendar — a self-contained continuity with its own dating system. You never need another calendar to enjoy one (that's the franchise's superpower). This is a curated atlas, not an episode database: ~30 series distilled to what each era IS.
🌒 The Dark History — the twist that claims every calendar
∀ (Turn A) Gundam · 1999 · Correct Century (C.C.) 2345

Tomino's millennium series is set in a pastoral far future where mustachioed mobile suits are dug out of the ground like fossils — and its central reveal is the franchise eating itself: the "Black History" locked in the moonlight butterfly's archives contains footage of the Universal Century, Wing, G and X. Canonically, every Gundam timeline is this world's forgotten past.

Whether that's literal cosmology or Tomino's poetry about war repeating is argued to this day — the show plays it straight, and we map it as the atlas's official coda: all calendars flow downhill into the Correct Century. (G-Reco's Regild Century is officially placed far beyond UC as well — the far future is getting crowded.)

The Universal Century — the trunk of the tree
The original calendar, still running after 45+ years: one continuous future history from the One Year War to the fall of empires, told across decades of series, films and OVAs. Years below are in-universe UC dates — the franchise's own spine, including a film released THIS year.
Char & the Masked Men — the archetype every calendar reinvents
Every alternate era gets its own Gundam, its own war — and its own masked blond rival. The "Char clone" is the franchise's one deliberate constant across calendars: proof the atlas is one family. First, the original:
🔻 Char Aznable — the Red Comet (Universal Century)

The template: a son avenging his father under a mask and a stolen name, three times faster than anyone and always fighting the wrong war. Rival (0079) → uneasy ally "Quattro Bajeena" (Zeta) → finally the villain of the whole calendar (Char's Counterattack), dropping an asteroid to force humanity's evolution. Amuro vs Char is the axis the Universal Century actually spins on — and in GQuuuuuuX (2025), the franchise finally asked: what if he'd WON the first war?

Doors In — the major works, checkable
You can't (and shouldn't) card ~30 series. These are the load-bearing doors into each calendar — the works people actually mean when they recommend Gundam. Check off what you've watched.
Where to start — the eternal question, answered honestly
The most-asked question in mecha fandom has a real answer: it depends which Gundam you want — and thanks to the calendar system, almost every door works without homework.
Beyond the anime — plastic, page & vapor
Here's the open secret: the shows exist, in part, to sell Gunpla — and the model kits long ago became a cultural force bigger than any single series. Plus the manga that redrew the origin, the novels where Tomino killed his own hero, and Hollywood's eternal maybe.
