CinemaCon has been a whirlwind of one studio trying to outdo another throughout the entire event and one announcement that may have flown under the radar was the official confirmation of “I Play Rocky”. Although Deadline first broke the news last May abof the project’s development by one half of the legendary comedic Director duo, the Farrelly Brothers (Peter) along with Toby Emmerich. During their CinemaCon panel, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the film has been in pre-production and now has a screenplay by Peter Gamble. Who has few credits to his name aside from a short lived sci-if series called “Trenches”.

The fact that Stallone startled his career with no credits to HIS name trying to sell the script for “rocky” gives us hope that Peter Gamble also has made some magic happen trying to bring that story to life through his own struggkes in a volatile industry. The fact that Farrelly has been involved with the project since the beginning and that he is choosing to go with Gamble’s script is a huge vote of confidence for the writer and the screenplay, which gives us hope for some movie magic that will give bring the rise of Sly to the silver screen.

Amazon did not give much more information on the project aside fro the fact that they hope to be in production soon. Although Stallone’s story is fairly well known amongst movie fans in general, it doesn’t ring as a very funny one…which is why Fareelly’s involvement seems strange without an official endorsement from Stallone himself. We feel that Amazon would want Stallone’s approval, given the open contempt the film legend had for the third installment in the Creed series, which was mainly due to him being left out of the film.
Farrelly or Amazon probably would not want to make an enemy of the powerful Hollywood figure, who just released “A Working Man” with Jason Statham to a solid Box Office outing and “Tulsa King” season 2 with a third being worked on, Would Amazon put out a movie that paints Sylvester like a doofus? We don’t think so, but have you seen “There’s Something About Mary”?

What do you think? What direction will Farrelly go with “I Play Rocky”? A comedic undertone seems imminent but Stallone is not famously known for the ability to laugh at himself.
