Everyone has been waiting since 2022 for the “Peaky Blinders” continuation film when series Creator Steven Knight confirmed that the project would start shooting in spring of 2023. Filming was delayed but the film reportedly went into production in October of 2024. We haven’t received any meaningful official updates about that project recently, but in the meantime Netflix and BBC pivoted and made an official announcement about a 2 season order for a “Peaky Blinders” sequel series, with six episodes in each season – the same as every other season of the flagship show.
Knight is on board for the sequel series while longtime star Cillian Murphy is also signed on as an Executive Producer. The sequels are supposed to be a follow up from the upcoming movie, which is expected to come out sometime in 2026. Knight has also revealed that the film and new sequels will feature a “new generation of Shelbys”. The Creator went on to say: “Once again, it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising form the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelby’s have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”
…Netflix and BBC pivoted and made an official announcement about a 2 season order for a “Peaky Blinders” sequel series, with six episodes in each season…”
The streamer released a logline that says the series starts in 1953 Britain after Birmingham builds a “better future”. The logo line goes on to state: “In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions… This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger, with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”
The series will be produced by the companies Kudos and Garrison Drama while all of the episodes will be approximately an hour long. Cillian Murphy’s character Tommy Shelby, the leader of the gang, has reached about the same status as Andrew Lincoln in ‘The Walking Dead”. Although season 6 was initially reported to be Murphy’s last hurrah as the character, but he would later change his tune by saying he’d be opening to retina for the right script. It seems the script is right and with the focus on the next generation, Murphy’s role and screentime is likely to be reduced to accommodate the super popular actor who also has some big features coming up in the ‘28 Days Later’ franchise.

The forthcoming movie is tentatively titled “The Immortal Man” for now and was reported to be done filming last December with Netflix posting a pic of two of the show’s stars, Murphy and Barry Keoghan. Although the movie wasn’t announced until after the end of the series, Knight has stated that “… my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie.” This new series may be the next logical step after the movie, but the movie seems like the logical end of the story first told starting with the main series. The show was initially intended for a seventh season, but it’s likely Knight saw the movie as. More final way to finding telling his story. Stephen Graham is also expected to reprise his role, amongst others. Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Roth are also scheduled to appear.
It has been eventually revealed that the film will take place during the Second World War, which fits in line with the series happening after the war. The film will be directed by series OG, Tom Harper. The ‘Peaky’ sequel has actually been teased since 2021, when Knight did an interview with BBC News and said” “We’re talking about it… I don’t like the word spin-offs, but TV series that are going to be inspired by and include characters from Peaky… there will be other TV shows that I hope will come out of [it], that will continue to tell the story of this part of society and family.”

It’s actually been reported since 2023 that two series set in the “Peaky Blinders” universe were being developed – one set after the original series in Boston in the 50’s or 60’s; and a prequel series focused on the backstory of Polly (Helen McRory), the Shelby aunt and advisor to their criminal activities. No new updates have been given for either project since them. The decision to order two seasons for this spin-off versus green lighting two tells us that this news means the concept and script for this newly announced spin-off must have been a very solid story that made the most sense. For BBC and Netflix to put all of their eggs into this basket means that they must have a lot of faith in what they’ve seen so far and this next generation of Peaky Blinders family.
What do you think? What will be the man conflict of the movie series? What will transpire during the movie? Will we ever get a release date? Will Murphy be heavily involved in the series? Or cold his character die in the upcoming film? Will the other two previously mentioned spin-offs ever get made? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
