Shortly after dropping the first surprisingly retro poster for the highly anticipated “The Mandalorian and Grogu” movie, the Star Wars YouTube Channel dropped the first teaser trailer for the film… and yes there is lots to talk about even though there’s very little dialogue. The movie was first announced January of 2024 after LucasFilm and Disney+ scrapped a fourth season of “The Mandalorian” and opted to place their bets on taking Baby Yoda and his adoptive dad “Mando” onto the big screen. It is a bit frustrating to have to wait until next May (05.22.26) to get to see the movie, but we’re hoping that extra time in post production will ensure the delay was worthwhile. The trailer was originally meant to air on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, but was released independently instead due to the late night host’s suspension.
Disney CEO Bob Iger said in an earnings call last year that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” would start a new slate of Star Wars films. With production stills recently starting to come in for the Ryan Gosling led “Star Wars: Starfighter”, which is set to release approximately a year after ‘TMAG’, it’s an exciting time for the Star Wars universe after a six year drought. Warning, beyond this point there are heavy spoilers for “The Mandalorian and Grogu” first teaser trailer.

Although the trailer didn’t reveal anything significant about the plot, it did introduce new cast member and sci-fi legend, Sigourney Weaver, who Grogu squawks at in the most adorable back and forth which we’ll get to later. The teaser starts with a Razor Crest replica (or rebuild) landing along a coastline. The planet is not titled, but it does look like they are flying towards Adelphi Base, which we first saw in “The Mandalorian” season 3.
In the next shot we see Baby Yoda doing some surveillance work with Din, as they spy on a building surrounded by Imperial Stormtroopers. After that, we’re transported to the sewers where we find out that Grogu has made an Anzellan friend. The species was first introduced in ‘Rise of Skywalker’ with Babu Frik. Frik works on Navarro, which is also where Din and Grogu moved to after season 3 of “The Mandalorian”, so this is likely where these shots are taking place.

Following that moment, the teaser cuts to Sigourney Weaver who plays an agent with the New Republic who has yet to be titled. We are. curious if her lineage is related to a fan favorite Star Wars character. Apparently, Weaver’s character is part of the leadership at the Adelphi Base. There have also been some images reveled of the character in a New Republic flight suit, which tells us we may get some type of star fight or hyper-speed chase during the film with Weaver in the cockpit. In her first shot, we see the titular duo and Weaver’s character all sitting at a table, where Baby Yoda is doing his patented abuse of the force by using it to steal food, which makes Weaver’s character put her foot down and leads to Grogu squawking at her for thwarting the hungry little dude’s plans for a free meal. When will Grogu actually talk? Maybe by the end of this movie? Yoda was a Jedi Master and teacher by the age of 100 and we know Grogu is 50, so hopefully we get to hear him say some actual words soon.
The next shot takes us to a shady looking cantina where Mando kicks someone into the shelves behind the bar. Baby Yoda jumps on Din’s shoulder before the sequence ends but we don’t really see any significant story details there. The promo then cuts to a very dark and terrifying looking alien emerging from the water, which may or may not be in the same location where Baby Yoda and his little buddy were earlier. After that, the trailer cuts to Grogu getting the ship ready to move and Din taking off very quickly. HIs ship is perished by three other ships that could be TIE interceptors, but it’s tough to say for sure. Following another adorable sequence of two shots of Grogu swimming, the promo cuts to a huge surprise, Zeb from “Star Wars Rebels” (Steven Blum) is completely annihilating a couple of stormtroopers in a tight space. We did already briefly see the character in “The Mandalorian” season 3 at Adelphi Base, but this action sequence along with some footage shown to audiences at D23 in 2024 indicates he might be an important character in the film. Next up is arguably the cutest shot of the trailer as Grogu is hanging with his new homies, the Anzellans. We know who his ride or die is, but Baby Yoda seems to have a whole new posse.

The shot after that shows Din in a jet pack up to a U-Wing ship and then cuts to an underground looking arena where one of the hits is raising his fists triumphantly. We know Jeremy Allan White plays Rotta the Hutt and is joining the cast, so this is likely Rotta, also know as Rotta the Huttlet and heir to the Hutt empire. Rotta was first introduced in the “Clone Wars” movie from 2008. Rotta used to be called “Stinky” by Ashoka when he was younger, but it appears the Hutt has come into his own for the events of ‘TMAG’. It is possible that the Hutt in the teaser is a separate Hutt and Rotta is a funnier and smaller sized Hutt, maybe the next trailer will give us more clues.
Din reacts to the Hutt’s cheer by saying “Impressive.” Before the promo cuts to Baby Yoda eating a treat while watching the action.
Following a title card, the teaser cuts to Mando in what could be a Hutt arena due to the emblems on the wall. Din is fighting two droids and then after another title card we see him fighting with a dinosaur looking creature who is actually a Mantellain Savrip, which is a super deep Easter Egg and the first mite we’ve seen a member of this species in live-action. After yet another title card, we see Din and Grogu jetpacking out of an Imperial AT-AT. Right before the whole unit explodes and falls off a cliff to reveal two more still walking forward and then cuts to a classic style title card. The teaser then cuts back fro one final sequence where Grogu encounters a large, one eyed rat. Grogu shoots the rat in it’s eye which gets the rat screeching while one of Baby Yoda’s Anzellan friends says “Good shot, baby!”.
Like it was stated at the beginning of the article, this trailer tells us basically zero about the story. The goal of this promo is to get people excited with vibes and feels but using cute shots of Baby Yoda and cool shoots of Mando. Introducing the Anzellans was also probably important for merchandising leading up to the release as these creatures who are even smaller than Grogu could end up stealing the show… Or pulling a Jar Jar if overused.
What do you think? Did we miss any golden Easter Eggs in the trailer? Will we get Grogu’s first words in this movie? What is in the future of the Star Wars universe for Din Djarin? Will Rotta the Hutt be a serious threat or comic relief? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
