“Wednesday” Season 2B Reveals Surprsing Addams Backstory, Finds Sweet Spot In Story

“Wednesday” released the back half of it’s season 2 less than a month after the series returned from an extended hiatus and the critics are loving it. There were some questions if there wasn’t enough Wednesday in the first half of the season, but the character takes ownership of her series much more definitively in the final four episodes. Since season 2 has kicked off, the series made it to the top of the chart for English language series in 91 countries, something never before achieved by any Netflix series. Season 2 has also increased the overall series RT score by 7% from 73 to 80% score and an 82% fan score.

The series was already renewed before the season premiere, and apparently there have been breadcrumbs that tease season 3 in the final episode. According to series Co-Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who just released some statements about the future of the series on Netflix’s Tudum website. Millar stated that some reveals in episode 8 would provide “a nice breadcrumb that leads audiences to wonder about Season 3 and what the new adventure for Wednesday will be.” The Co-Creator would go on to say “We will be adding more Addams family members and learning more family secrets in Season 3!” Before we get into any breadcrumbs that might have been left, let’s breakdown Wednesday season 2B and cover what worked while flagging up what didn’t. Warning, beyond this point there are spoilers for people who are not up to date on the “Wednesday” TV series on Netflix.

Millar stated that some reveals in episode 8 would provide “a nice breadcrumb that leads audiences to wonder about Season 3 and what the new adventure for Wednesday will be.”

Season 2B starts with the return of a character thought dead… who actually is, Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie). We learn that Weems is Wednesday’s new spirit guide as they are 13th cousins, twice removed. Weems performance is enthusiastic although the character is a bit vapid about her legacy. Wednesday mostly ignores Weems although she helps the daughter of her rival at some key points throughout the rest of the season. The series reveals that the Willow Hill escapees had all been capture except for 3: ‘John Doe’, a familiar zombie, Fester (Fred Armisen), and Tyler (Hunter Doohan). The shoe seemingly sets up the Hyde as the villain, but ignoring Pugsley’s (Isaac Ordonez) ever evolving pet zombie Slurp (Owen Painter) would be a mistake.

Wednesday’s persistent drive to recover her lost powers is one of the more humanizing plot points in season 2 and in season 2B she steps up those efforts, even recruiting her Granmama Hester Frump. Seeing 3 generations of women try to navigate stealthy relationships in a fantastical world is still somehow relatable. Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Pugsley also had some. Solid. Father son. time, while not detracting from Wednesday and her mission to save Enid/get her powers back.

A new fan favorite episode is in episode 6, titled “Woe Thyself” where Wednesday and Enid (Emma Myers) end up switching bodies a la “Freaky Friday”. Both actresses deserve props for their performances as their castmate, with Wednesday proving she truly is allergic to color. Enid uses Wednesday’s body to perform a very trendy looking dance to the delight of the student body and TikTok in general. Wednesday in Enid’s body also sees some uncomfortable situation although Wednesday uses her time to investigate their situation as there is a ticking clock on the switch are that will see both characters dead otherwise. Episode 6 is one of the strongest in the series as the two characters come together to overcome their body swap and learn a lot about each other at the same time. Lady Gaga’s cameo is also very entertaining for episode 6 although we wish we would have gotten a dance routine out of the pop icon’s feature.

By episode 7, we realize the true villain was actually Slurp all along! Isaac Night was friends with Gomez and Morticia (Catherine Zeta Jones) back in the night and he was the zombie that Pugsley created when he reanimated the DaVinci mad scientist who was buried at Nevermore. The story twist that Isaac stole Gomez’ powers but was killed when Morticia intervened. The big reveal that Thing is actually the hand of Isaac was shocking and a twisted surprise. It gives new death to a beloved character that is only a hand and was a very effective way of tying everything together. Thing is ultimately the key to victory over Isaac while his nephew. Tyler seems to escape into a better future by the tie the finale is over.

Principal Dort’s (Steve Buscemi) storyline seems harmless at first, until his cult leader status’s and gran plan to rob Hester Frump are revealed. This storyline was not as strong as Tyler and Isaac’s but it did showcase how powerful Sirens are in this world, which may come back into play n the series in the future.
It’s still unclear which direction Wednesday might go an both creators are adamant they won’t be sharing story details anytime soon.

Enid’s storyline of being an Alpha and losing her humanity came on a little fast but it did beg the question: How will Wednesday find her, let alone bring her back? This is likely at least a detour in the season 3 premiere if not a more l one term story. Our prediction is that Wednesday will use Isaac’s technology to remove at least part of Enid’s powers. Enid’s whole identity is tied to her outcast heritage, so removing her powers entirely seems harsh, but this show isn’t known for it’s happy moments!

What do you think? Is season 2 the best season yet? What’s in store for Wednesday and Thing in season 3? Will Gomez ever get his powers back? How can Enid be saved? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
