DC fans everywhere are getting excited for their moment…which might finally be here. After James Gunn took over the franchise and delivered us “Peacemaker”, they do have a right to be hopeful. The new “Lanterns” series centers around Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart, played by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, respectively. James Hawes, the Director of the first two episodes of the Max show (which is now in production) made some comments to Collider about the third TV show in the DCU while promoting his upcoming movie “The Amateur”.
Hawes, who is well known for his work on “Doctor Who”, “Black Mirror” and “Slow Horses” seems very excited about the series and the humor contained within. The veteran Director seemed to not previously be a huge fan of the superhero genre, given the way he speaks about it, sort of with a reserved but accepting disdain. In the same vein, he also explains how this series won him over to the genre, just with the humor. He teases the standard sci-fi magic along the way but gives us the feeling that this series will be much more grounded than we originally anticipated. Hawes even went so far to say that the production has “bewitched” him.

The news that’s been doled out about the series so far has been interesting to say the least…with a “True Detective” tonal vibe, according to the Showrunner Chris Mundy, who is known for his crime dramas like “Ozark” and “True Detective”. The two main characters (Chandler & Pierre) are set to investigate a murder in Nebraska, which is surprising considering the Green Lantern Corps are a galactic organization that’s filled with aliens of a myriad of species.
Hawes was very light footed about giving out any actual spoilers in his interview but we can gleam some things off of his description about the past few weeks of shooting: “I’ve been on the set the last four-and-a-bit weeks; the way the cast is landing is electric. I’m thrilled by who we’ve got here. I don’t think DC fans will be in any way disappointed. I know James Gunn has already spoken about how excited he is.” We find it interesting that he says he’s thrilled by who they have there and then talks about the fans being disappointed. Is this a freudian slip that sopme other popular character from the DCU will show up? That would put the odds on someone from the “Peacemaker” cst – whcih would make ssense due to the other two shows currently in the universe being “Peacemaker” and a “Waller” spin-off. Could we get an appearance form a “Superman” charatcer with the movie coming out this July? It’s really tough to say,

Even though the series may be grounded in a small town in Nebraska, we know from cating list that “Sinestro” (a space villain), will be a part of the series and is played by Ulrich Thomsen from “Banshee” and “The Blacklist”. If Sinestro is around, we are betting that there could be some type of Alien crossover element that comes from “Superman” but John Cena’s Peacemaker is always a safe bet for laughs and excitement, which has been Gunn’s formula since before GotG. We are confident Hawes will work his magic with the first 2 episodes and given the fact that the other Directors listed have worked on “Watchmen”, “Ozark” and “House of the Dragon”, it feels like the series is in good hands.

What do you think? Will the be some crossover characters or are we reading too deep? Let us know in the comments below!
