New Ryan Coogler Horror Film “Sinners” Early Reviews Are In…Is The Box Office Ready?

Non-franchise moves have been getting clobbered this year, but Ryan Coogler hopes to change that trend with his new tour de force horror film, “Sinners”…and he just might pull it off. So far, the critical response to this film has been stellar, with reviewers praising Coogler’s first film time directing something not based on existing IP. Did Coogler and his longtime collaborator Michael B. Jordan pull off some legitimate magic that is the culmination of the combined experiences of multiple high profile careers? Sorry, that’s a rhetorical question because “Sinners” is truly a cinematic gem.
Mainstream audiences are just starting to get in to see the movie, but for once it seems like critics and viewers in the theaters are on the same page. Warning, there will be light spoilers for the film “Sinners” ahead.

Now, we are not going to layout the entire plot of the movie but just want to talk more about the overall tone, theme and of course, binge-ability. Jordan actually plays twins, which is always fun to see one actor embody two characters, but that feeling gets amplified here with the deep backstory and history these two characters have together. In some ways, the story does have hints of Tarantino, but all in all, it feels more like Cooler taking his art to the next level…and we are there for it.

The vampire themes has drawn some comparisons from the classic vampire movie “From Dusk ‘Til Dawn”, but Coogler’s vibe feels a lot different…especailly with all the racially charged overtones throughout the film. The director manages to splash a lot of different genres into the movie, although given the fact that the movie is 2 hours and 17 minutes, it should be filled with a lot of interesting elements to keep the audience entertained.

The first half of the movie does drag, until the main conflict arrives, but the action to the end is intense and will keep pretty much anyone from falling asleep. The musical overtones (which were touched upon in the trailer), are a nice addition to the story and r really illuminate the chemistry that Coogler has with composer Ludwig Göransson, who has collaborated with the Director on all of his films. Will “Sinners” be the biggest movie of the year? We are not sure about that, but with Coogler’s average on RT hanging around 90%, you are pretty much guaranteed a great night at the theater. Jordan has already talked about doing a prequel for “Sinners”. so there still may be more to this story after all…
