“Adolescence” Producers To Do TV Reboot Of Beloved British Movie “Threads”

“Adolescence” Production Company Warp Films is not wasting any time capitalizing on the popularity of one of Netflix’s most watched shows of all time. The company’s founder and CEO talked to The Hollywood Reporter about their plans for the future recently…and that includes the 1984 apocalyptic U.K. classic, “Threads”. Warp has bought the option for the movie and is planning on remaking it into a TV series. Whether this will be a soft reboot, a hard reset or a revival is unclear.
The original film “Threads” never reached a great level of notoriety in America, but is a cult classic across the pond. The film was the first dramatic depiction of a nuclear winter and was lauded by critics and audiences for it’s depiction of what nuclear weapons do to a society during a time when that allegory was sorely needed. During these uncertain times, this definitely seems like a well thought out move.

Mark Herbert, Warp Films’ founder and CEO had this to say about the project: “Threads was, and remains, an unflinchingly honest drama that imagines the devastating effects of nuclear conflict on ordinary people. This story aligns perfectly with our ethos of telling powerful, grounded narratives that deeply connect with audiences…” The company’s CCO, Emily Feller added this:  “Threads is clearly a deeply impactful story and right now, it feels more relevant than ever. This adaptation will allow us to uncover fresh interpretations in light of today’s world.  We imagine highlighting how resilience and connection can offer hope even in the most challenging of times…”

After “Adolescence” and their new BBC Revenge Thriller “Reunion”, the time seems right for Warp Films to take over this IP and bring it to a worldwide audience – in a time when the world seems to need stories like this. This situation seems like a win-win, with an existing fanbase that’s not too large or picky (we’re looking at you Star Wars). A fanbase too large sometimes enable toxicity and vitriol about what the series or movie should be but here the smaller fanbase should only help give the series organic, grass-roots marketing in it’s beginning.
