“Game of Thrones” fans can sometimes be intense, but they arguably have had to put up with a lot of disappointment over the years. Earlier in 2025, the newest spin-off in the GoT universe had it’s release date pushed back to 2026, without any explanation. According to a reliable ‘GoT’ fan account called “House the Dragons”, the series is currently going through reshoots in Belfast. The new entry into a light-hearted corner of the GoT-U is based off of Gearge R.R. Martin’s novellas, the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” which is set to give us a more grounded look into a universe that includes, green-seers, dragons, giants, zombies and so many other fantastical creatures. Martin has published 3 novellas in the series, which doesn’t leave a lot of original IP for the creators to work with, but season 1 shouldn’t have an issue with material. Martin has expressed interest in writing more books for the series, but HBO has already shown they won’t end up waiting for an infamously delayed writer.
Initial reports of members of the media who have seen footage from “A Knight of the Seven Kingdom” have notably commented on the humor in the footage that was shown to them, which seems a stark contrast from ‘GoT’ and “House of the Dragon”. Those shows chronologically book-end ‘7 Kingdoms’, which occurs with about a century of padding after ‘HotD’ and before ‘GoT’.

“Game of Thrones” notoriously reshot a large part of season 1 due to some re-casts amongst other issues, but it’s unclear the extent of the reshoots that are taking place for ‘7 Kingdoms’. George R.R. Martin saw rough cuts of all 6 episodes of the upcoming series and loved them, but rough cuts to final cuts can sometimes be as vast as an ocean. Martin has been honest about his disdain for other editorial choices so his stamp of approval does mean something in this scenario, but how impartial and removed can he truly be from the source material?
The source material also may dictate a faster pace of production than HBO. Has recently been used to, as the “Egg” half of ‘Dunk and Egg’ is based off of child, so if the series wants to recur and run through the books at a proper pace, they won’t be able to wait two to three years between seasons. HBO executive Francesca Orsi said in an interview to Deadline that “The role of Egg only spans not even a year, so you have to roll into it (season to season) pretty quickly, because this little kid will grow up too quickly if we wait too long.” As far as adapting other books she went on to say: “We’re already planning on how do we build this for the three seasons in total…We’re not picking it up officially, but it’s looking very good. We’re looking at it as a holistic piece, Seasons 2 and 3, because there’s three novellas.”

Although that is a nice pat on the back from the higher-ups, it only really promises us 18 episodes in total, which is less than 2 traditional season of ‘GoT’. We do think that the tone of this show will be a pleasant change from all of. The high-stakes political dragon warfare, but how kid-friendly will it be? Will the changes made be taking out some of the humor? Or adding more sex appeal? Which neither of the other in universe shows have ever lacked. We’re curious if any inappropriate familial relation situations will occur like they have in the other series, but the facts that there’s a younger actor doesn’t really guarantee the show will be any less adult… as HBO has always been known to push the boundaries of intense content and child actors.
The reshoots in Belfast at least tells us that the Production is at least utilizing the original home base of the ‘GoT’ franchise. IN. The case of “Game of Thrones”, reshooting the pilot, as expensive as it was, was the right choice Do reshoots here bode well for a new show before it’s even come out? Martin tested a huge fight scene in the series, but emphasized that the show was going to a character driven entry into the franchise, so fans expecting higher Westeros world building or connections larger than Easter eggs to other shows may end up disappointed.

Irish actor Peter Claffey from Bad Sisters plays the character Ser Duncan or ‘Dunk’ while his squire ‘Egg’ will be played by very young TV newcomer Dexter Sol Ansell. Finn Bennet, Sam Spruell, Bertie Carvel and Henry Ashton are all cast as Targaryen’s, along with Daniel Ings as a Baratheon, but no House Stark listed. Fans of the book series have been divided online about the adaptation, as “House of the Dragon” is a different style of book and less frightfully guarded by purists that insist on matching the source materials every explicit detail.
What do you think? Should the series stay extremely loyal to it’s original source material? Or. Have these reshoots changed the entire feel? How soon into 2026 will we get this series? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
