New ‘Simpsons’ Movie Set For Summer 2027 Release, 20 Year After Original

20 year later while it’s flagship TV series is still alive and kicking, “The Simpsons Movie” will be releasing a sequel through 20th Century Fox on July 23rd, 2027. The film will replace a Marvel Project that was never named, if this is a troublesome sign for the MCU or just some logistical problem is yet to be seen. As it now stands, there will be no sequels between “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. After the ‘Fantastic Four’ failed to get. close to the bill in dollar mark, Disney+ may be rethinking their release strategies for the mCU and shifting to a known earner. The original ‘Simpsons’ movie made over $536 million in the box office, which would put the film closer to $700 million in ticket sales today.

Nether Disney and 20th Century Fox put out an official statement with any details, bit opted for an Instagram post instead of a promotional poster. The poster showed Homer taking the iconic pink frosted donut from the original poster with a caption: “HOMER’S COMING BACK FOR SECONDS.” The original series is currently renewed through series 40, which will air starting late 2028 into 2029. The series currently just aired it’s premiere episode of season 37 and it’s 791st episode of all time. It’s likely the series will have a celebratory event for the 800th episode and may even release some additional information about “The Simpsons Movie” sequel. Going at the current rate of episodes per season, “The Simpsons” wold hit episode 1,000 around season 47 or 48. It’s unclear if the cast and crew are interested in hitting that milestone, but given the reinvigoration the series has received upon being available for binging on Disney+, 1,000 episodes is definitely possible. That would take the timeline to around 2035 for a possible endgame for the series. “The Simpsons” has managed to stay relevant since the 1980’s and even according to some conspiracy theories, they have accurately predicted future events on a handful of occasions.

The film will replace a Marvel Project that was never named, if this is a troublesome sign for the MCU or just some logistical problem is yet to be seen.”

A sequel for “The Simpsons Movie” has been tossed around since around 2012. In 2014, series Co-Showrunner/Writer for the movie James L. Brooks said he was approached by Fox, who wanted to make a sequel. At the time, Brooks didn’t feel the project was important and said “We’re doing a lot of other stuff.” There was an episode in season 26 that aired back in 2014 called “The Man Who Came to Be Dinner” that was held back by Brooks for since 2013 because he thought they episode was cinematic enough to be expanded into a Sue well for the film.

“The Man Who Came to Be Dinner” did have a great plot, the Simpsons go to Diz-Nee-Land but eventually end up on a spaceship with Treehouse of Horror OG’s Kang and Kodos. The Simpsons end up as exhibits in an intergalactic zoo but manage to escape and somehow create a situation that gets them a ride home. Whether or not any elements from this story will be adapted into the 2027 sequel are unknown but not likely.

Back in July of 2017, Director of the original film, David Silverman made a statement that the sequel was in the eagerly stages of development. By 2019, after Disney acquired Fox, series Creator Matt Groening stated that he had “no doubts” that The Walt Disney Company would produce a sequel one day. The merger seemingly back burnered the project, which now seems like it’s moving full steam ahead. Whether or not Silverman will be working on this iteration of the sequel remains to be seen.

One gag we’re likely to see paid off is Bart’s chalkboard gag, which crossed over with the movie as the first series episode to air after “The Simpsons Movie” came out in theaters featured Bart writing “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie” on the chalkboard in the iconic intro to the show. Although they are technically 4 days shy of 20 years, it still feels like Creators didn’t really keep their promise which we’re sure they’ll acknowledge in a hilarious Easter Egg that either ends up in the sequel or in the series around the date the next ‘Simpsons’ movie is released.

The release date set in 2027 puts a ‘Simpsons’ sequel up against the animated musical “Bad Fairies” by Warner Bros. Right now, even though are not a ratings powerhouse the wya they used to be, a family friendly movie about the Simpsons would still likely get a significant amount of butts in seats. The next episode to air will be season 37 episode 2 on Sunday night, titled: ‘Keep Chalm and Gary On” which is an obvious reference to the school’s superintendent, Gary Chalmers.

What do you think? What tricks do “The Simpsons” have left up their sleeves? What will the sequel be about? Will we ever see Spider-Pig again? Will the series ever do any spin-offs with the grown kids in the future? Will the series ever hit 1,000 episodes? Could they end up putting out two sequels to make the movie series a trilogy?
