“A Minecraft Movie” Completely Dominates The Box Office Despite Harsh Reviewing Critics

Sometimes a films RT score doesn’t count for much…and in the case of “A Minecraft Movie”, the 48% Tomatometer proves that critics don’t always know what the masses will love. The video game adaptation just had the highest grossing opening weekend of all time of ANY video game movie.
Long time fans of the franchise did seem vocal about being disappointed, but people went out in droves anyway to see the family friendly film, which has grosses over 300 million worldwide and over 163 million from U.S. Theaters. Was this a perfect storm on the back of CinemaCon, with no suitable family friendly alternative? Possibly, but whatever your conclusion you can’t argue wit the results of the movie that has already made back double it’s budget in a weekend. Warning, there are light spoilers for “A Mnecraft Movie” ahead.

The video game adaptation just had the highest grossing opening weekend of all time of ANY video game movie.

The film uses a plot device similar to Jumanji (another Jack Black classic) and other sci-fi tropes before a rag-tag group of gamer misfits get sucked into the game. It’s there they meet Jack Black (who never wants to leave the game) and come up with their mission to get home. Momoa is entertaining throughout but in small doses. Jack Black’s signature humor was a saving grace for the slower moments and less flushed out parts of the story.

Is the Minecraft movie “Interstellar”? Of course not. It’s a movie that appeals to multiple generations and tells a fun and simplistic story. Is the real news here the divide between what the critics and audiences seem to want? Could this be the biggest movie of 2025 in the Box Office? That is quite possible with not many “Avengers: Endgame” level films coming out anytime soon. The newest Mission Impossible movie and “Karate Kid: Legends”, who are opening one week apart in May both might have a chance at the top slot although they will likely cancel each other out. The John Wick spin-off may perform well in June, but almost 1/3 of a billion dollars in a weekend? That’s a tall order for any blockbuster. “Superman” in July is the only strong contender we see that will beta what “A Minecraft Movie” will have accomplished in it’s theatrical run.

This movie is likely not the end of the franchise after many loose ends seem purposely left for future movies and spin-off projects, but after this regional project was wrought with delays, nobody should be holding their breath. Is the season of long delays between seasons and movies over? Let’s see how long before we get the Next Minecraft Movie and then we’ll talk.

What do you think? Were the critics right, or are they out of touch? Will “A Minecraft Movie” win the Box Office in 2025?
