“Game of Thrones” Spin-Off Finally Gets HBO Release Window, “Euphoria” As Well

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight” was supposed to be released in 2025, but reshoots have pushed that window back to sometime in 2026, disappointing and worrying longtime franchise fans. Following the Emmy Awards, HBO and Max Content CEO Casey Bloys gave an interview to Variety and casually spoke about the future of the ‘GoT’ spin-off as well as the wildly popular but long dormant series, “Euphoria”, which hasn’t had a new episode in over three and a half years. The executive revealed that Euphoria will be back in spring of 2026, but they “…don’t have a date confirmed yet.”

The show was initially renewed in February of 2022, but the series was wrought with delays due to the terrible tragedy of losing cast member Angus Cloud, and then losing Executive Producer Kevin Turen. Along with the strikes, delays were inevitable. Production for the series finally started in February of 2025, which gives the “Euphoria” team about 13 – 14 months to a release in spring of 2026. Post production on the series shouldn’t be extensive, but HBO is likely factoring in extra time, just in case of reshoots.

For “House of the Dragon” season 2, HBO took eight and a half months from finishing filming to release, but this post production timeframe for “Euphoria” seems a bit excessive. Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi are in high demand amongst their other extremely talented castmates, but once they’re done filming, the delays are behind the cameras and in the edit bays. There will also be a slew of new cast members, some high profile figures like Marshwan Lynch. Longtime TV veteran Kadeem Harrison will also join the cast amongst a handful of others. Could Tom Holland be making a surprise cameo?

The problem with “Euphoria” is that the series first focused around kids, so like “Stranger Things”, when 4 years happen between seasons, it sometimes kills the connection between the viewer and the kid they were watching who is now an awkward teen or young adult. When binge watching these series, the age discrepancies become a distraction from the story, but in the case of “Euphoria” and the aforementioned tragedies, there was no avoiding taking an extended hiatus between seasons.

Bloys also made comments about an unreleased but highly anticipated series, the “Game of Thrones” spin-off, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Hedge Knight”. The series is evidently done with reshoots as Bloys said “I’m going to say January. How about that?” The statement doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that there won’t be any more delays, but the series was doing reshoots back in July, so they likely are back in post and fixing whatever was wrong with the rough cuts that George RR Martin was raving about some time ago. The series will be based off of Martin’s book series the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” about a knight and his young squire (who is secretly a Targaryen) that go on adventures throughout the kingdoms.

The series is supposed to be a more light hearted entry than it’s predecessors in the ‘GoT’ universe, occurring a hundred years before “Game of Thrones” and after “House of the Dragon”. Peter Claffey stars as Ser Duncan or “Dunk” while Dexter Sol Ansell stars as Egg. The creators of the series are pushing to shoot much faster than usual for a ‘GoT’ series due to the fact that Egg’s actor will grow up too fast. We would never complain about getting TV a year after the last season, like what used to be the standard.

“House of the Dragon” is set to be released in 2026 after a two year hiatus. The series is looking to make a habit of that as the fourth season has reportedly not been written yet, which means a release window for the fourth (and final) season would keep with the ‘HotD’ trend at sometime in summer of 2028. The Jon Snow sequel series was shelved in 2024, but it’s likely that once the ‘GoT’ well dries up, HBO will approach Kit Harington with a bag of cash to do a “Cobra Kai” type revival of his character after he’s been away for a decade or more.

Bloys himself actually said that “Maybe we’ll try again…” about the Snow spin-off, but declined to give any details. Bloys has a casual way of dangling these series over the heads of anticipating fans, hopefully the wait is worth it or the future may not look so bright for the ‘GoT’ universe.

What do you think? Will ‘Hedge Knight’ entice the fans who are jaded from the ending of ‘GoT’? Will the series manage to win a younger generation over? Will there be any connection to either series in the overall universe? Will there be any dragons? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
