Peacock Cancels “Based On A True Story” And “Mr. Throwback” Abruptly

Peacock has gotten their axe out a little early this year and started handing out death sentences to a couple of their existing newer shows. Unfortunately for fans of “Based on a True Story” and “Mr. Throwback”, there will be no happy ending…or any ending other than whatever was in each respective show’s last episode.
In a policy that lacks transparency and is used more often nowadays, Peacock doesn’t report viewership info (thanks Netflix), so it’s tough to say if ratings were the sole factor but clearly shows that are kicking ass and taking names in the viewership department don’t get cancelled without some sort of force majeure.

Both shows surprisingly had strong reviews, with “based on a True Story” getting 79% Rotten Tomatoes Score and “Mr. Throwback” at a solid 86%. Our theory is that both series essentially had too many cooks in the kitchen. Steph Curry and his company were EP’ing “Mr. Throwback” while Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina were also serving as EP’s on their series. The budgets and creative division/chain of command may have had something to do with why the shows got axed, but this is only pure speculation.
Peacock has a few more shows with second seasons incoming, “Poker Face” and “Twisted Metal”. If those series do not perform well, they may be the next ones to go. Especially “Twisted Metal” given the major effects needed to stay faithful to the video game series, plus Anthony Mackie’s paycheck. Peacock also has yet to release their final ‘Superfan’ episode season of “The Office” before they drop their revival series which will include Dunder Mifflin character Oscar Martinez. We have high hopes for that series, tentatively called “The Paper” for now.

Peacock will also be releasing a reboot of the classic Tom Hanks dark comedy “The ‘Burbs” starring Keke Palmer although no set date has been released. Peacock has not been bleeding money the way some other steamers have in the past few years and actually have shown steady growth in the subscriber department, so maybe they are making the right call on these series…but it still leaves holes in the hearts of many fans.

What do you think? What shows will Peacock kill next? Will “Ted” season 2 be a fan favorite?
