San Diego Comic-Con has a way of turning a single photo into an event, and this year “Star Wars” delivered exactly that. At SDCC 2025, Lucasfilm pulled back the curtain on “Ahsoka” Season 2 with a first look at Ezra Bridger — and the reaction was close to unanimous. Fans took one glance at Eman Esfandi’s returning rebel and decided the show had nailed it.
If you came to live-action “Star Wars” through “The Mandalorian” and never watched the animated shows, Ezra might not mean much to you. To everyone who grew up on “Star Wars Rebels,” he’s a big deal — the young Force-sensitive heart of that series, a street kid turned Jedi who vanished into the unknown alongside the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn in the “Rebels” finale. The first season of “Ahsoka” was built largely around the hunt to find him, and now Season 2 gets to actually do something with him. The image itself is the whole story. Shown at the “Star Wars” booth, the first look reveals Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) with a cleaner, sharper appearance than we saw last season — clean-shaven, shorter and tamer hair, and those two familiar scars on his cheek, a look that echoes the animated Ezra fans have loved for years. It’s a small change on paper and a big one in practice: this is Ezra looking like Ezra, the “Rebels” character stepping cleanly into live-action rather than a loose approximation of him.
That’s what set the reaction off. The word “perfect” got thrown around a lot, and for a fandom that scrutinizes every casting choice down to the pixel, that’s no small praise. Esfandi debuted as Ezra in the back half of “Ahsoka” Season 1, but this first look — the tidied hair, the scars, the expression lifted straight off the animated model — is the moment he really clicks into the role. Adapting a beloved cartoon character into flesh and blood is a minefield, and the early verdict is that they walked through it clean.
Season 2 is shaping up to be a proper “Rebels” reunion at galactic scale. We already know Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) leads the charge, that Hayden Christensen is back as Anakin Skywalker, and that the season is building toward a confrontation with Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) across two galaxies. Dave Filoni, the man who created Ezra and Ahsoka in animation, is guiding all of it, which is exactly why the details feel so faithful — this is the person who knows these characters better than anyone translating his own work.
The bigger picture is what makes this exciting. “Ahsoka” is the closest thing “Star Wars” has to a live-action continuation of its animated universe, the bridge that lets a whole generation of fans finally see their favorite cartoon heroes in the flesh. Season 1 spent a lot of energy just getting the pieces onto the board. With Ezra found and the roster assembled, Season 2 can stop setting the table and start telling the story — and a confrontation with Thrawn spanning two galaxies is about as high as the stakes get.
One photo can’t tell you whether a season will be great, of course. But it can tell you whether the people making it understand what fans love, and this first look at Ezra suggests they do. Filming is underway, the return to Disney+ is set for next year, and for anyone who’s been waiting since the “Rebels” finale to see how Ezra’s story continues, Comic-Con just made the wait feel a lot shorter.
