“Hacks” Season 4 Premieres Using The Same Old Tricks, But Takes Time To Find The Story

“Hacks” is back on Max and hoping to capitalize on it’s growing popularity after less than a one year break between seasons. The show which has gained a lot of steam since first airing in 2021 ended on a pretty brutal cliffhanger between the two main characters, Deborah and Ava (played by Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, respectively). Season 4 picked up right where 3 finished and didn’t waste any time putting the two stars at each others throats.
The series has been praised by critic and fans for it’s irreverent take on an increasingly rockier landscape of comedy, where the line between political correctness and funniness grows smaller and smaller by the day. Season 4 does give us many elements of what made the show so popular, but many fans and critics seemed to want something new…that just wasn’t there right to start. Warning, there are light spoilers for “Hacks” season 4 ahead.

Season 4 picked up right where 3 finished and didn’t waste any time putting the two stars at each others throats.

The inciting event that put the two main characters at each others throat and it takes 2 full episodes to get the characters out of another argument they were in, but after 3 seasons of seeing this cycle…it is starting to get a little old. The writing and jokes were on unit as always, with Kayla shining as usual and bringing on a starnge new assistant for the company. Marcus’ struggle to say goodbye also feels like more of the same as he has also been trying to leave for awhile.

Is th moral of the story that everything goes in cycles in Hollywood? We don’t think so but it wold be good to have something break the chain of events in season 4. Given how long it took to get out of a cliffhanger, we are not as optimistic as usual, but there are 8 more episodes to go before we will draw any real conclusion about the strength of the show and it’s future.

This show is a very fresh and progressive take n the world of comedy and Hollywood in general so we definitely want to give it a chance, so hopefully the creators have some big moments and unexpected twists in the near future of the show.

The 2 episode weren’t without their charm and it is still fun to see Ava lording technology over Deborah or for the two to resort to childish mispronunciations of each others names, but it will take more than the same bag of tricks to keep growing their viewership and to guarantee a fight season (whcih the creators always intended the show to have).

If you’re looking for a fun show to binge, now is the time to put “Hacks” into your queue, but if you’re discouraged by the premiere, take a short break and come back to see what the creators have in store.
