The first major awards show of the season may not be an exact indicator of how the Academy Awards or the Golden Globes will go, but it does give us a roadmap about who might be the next big winner in a somewhat dejected film and tv industry. Merger fever has taken over Hollywood in recent years and the uncertainty has only increased after Netflix’s seemingly inevitable purchase of WB is finalized. There have been rumors of Netflix shortening the theatrical release window of WB’s future films, but for now Netflix is playing nice with the theater chains. During Sunday night’s Critic Choice Awards Ryan Coogler increased his star power with 17 nominations for his hit horror film “Sinners” and edged out Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” which still had a very impressive 14 nods. Netflix landed the top 2 spots for TV nominations with “Adolescence” and “Nobody Wants This” grabbing 6 and 5, respectively.
The wild card in the race was Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme”, led by Timothée Chalomet, which just landed in theaters for the last week of the year. Chalamet’s performance has been lauded by critics and has now been proven to audiences as the film stands to be A24’s first $100 million dollar movie. Chalomet rode the recent wave of success past one of his mentors, Leo DiCaprio amongst a talented slew of leading men to win the CCA for Best Actor. It’s possible that DiCaprio will take home the statue next week in the Golden Globes, but the Academy Awards in March could end up going to either or someone else entirely. As far as Best Picture, Paul Thomas Anderson would get the gold for ‘OBAA’, which only strengthens the film’s chances of winning an Oscar. Ryan Coogler still has a strong chance of “Sinners” winning Best Picture in at least one of the awards shows, but better movies have been snubbed harder.
During Sunday night’s Critic Choice Awards Ryan Coogler increased his star power with 17 nominations for his hit horror film “Sinners” and edged out Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” which still had a very impressive 14 nods.”
It was a significant surprise that ‘OBAA’ did not bring home any awards in the acting categories, although Anderson did manage to snag Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Coogler would take home the Best Original Screenplay award with “Sinners” along with 3 other wins for Best Casting & Ensemble, Best Young Actor (Miles Caton) and Best Score for longtime Coogler collaborator Ludwig Göransson. Best Actress went to Jessie Buckley, who starred in the critically acclaimed Chloé Zhao picture, “Hamnet”. Netflix also showed up in the Film categories with 11 nominations for their Guillermo Del Toro reimagining of ‘Frankenstein’ and 4 wins.
Rising star Jacob Elordi brought home the statue for Best Supporting Actor as the Creature, Frankenstein’s creation. The film also brought home winds for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Hair and Make-Up. Zach Cregger’s Weapons landed 4 nominations and one win with Amy Madigan landing the title for Best Supporting Actress. Netflix also found another winner in the period drama “Train Dreams”, with 5 noms and a win for Best Cinematography. The Best Editing award (Stephen Mirrione) gave Apple a much needed win for its big budget Brad Pitt film, “F1”. The racing-centric pic would also win the award for Best Sound.

James Cameron’s recent entry into his own billion dollar film club, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” managed to take the cake for Best Visual Effects, although it’s surprising the blockbuster didn’t nab any more nominations. In the stunt category, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” was the top choice for Best Stunt Design for Paramount. Paramount got another win with their Liam Nelson led reboot of the ‘Naked Gun’ franchise, winning Best Comedy. Unsurprisingly, “KPop Demon Hunters” brought home Best Animated Feature for Netflix as well as the Best Song award. Best Foreign Language Film went to the Portuguese neo-noir political thriller, “Secret Agent”, which has won an impressive slew of awards at festivals, including Cannes.
On the TV side, strong favorite “The Pitt” took the top slot for Best Drama Series with leading man Noah Wyle winning Best Actor while his female co-worker . Best Actress went to Rhea Seehorn for Vince Gilligan’s new strange apocalyptic series “Pluribus. It was surprising that “Severance” didn’t score more wins, but Tramel Tillman did manage to snag the gold for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Seth Rogen’s the “Studio” won Best Comedy as well as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Rogen and Ike Barinholz, respectively. Jean Smart managed to walk away with Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her iconic portrayal of fictional comedian Deborah Vance on HBO’s “Hacks”. It was a quiet night for the wildly popular “Abbott Elementary”, although Janelle James was the winner for Best Supporting Actess in a Comedy Series.

Best Limited Series was pretty much a lock for Netflix’s “Adolescence”, which also brought Netflix more wins in that category for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Best Actress in a Limited Series went to Sarah Snook for her highly applauded role in “All Her Fault. The Best Movie Made for Television went to Peacock’s “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy”, beating out some stiff competition from HBO Max and Netflix. Best Foreign Language Series obviously went to “Squid Game”, while “South Park” brought home the gold for their unapologetically political recent back to back 5 episode seasons.
The Best Talk Show title went to Jimmy Kimmel while John Oliver landed the award for the Best Variety. The honor of Best Comedy Special went to SNL’s 50th anniversary celebration, a slot where legacy comedians once dominated on their own.
Do the Critics Choice Awards accurately reflect an audience that is souring on long form content every year? Even if the CCA’s are a predictor of the Oscar’s, they still don’t account for lagging fan interest in theaters along with Netflix’s thirst to own all the IP on the map.
What do you think? Will these awards show ever push for change or a new narrative? Or is change meant to be found somewhere else? Let us know what you think in the comments and check out a full list of winners and nominees below!
