The Golden Globes are in and they were undoubtedly a different experience than the Critic’s Choice Awards last week. So far, the Oscar race points to a small handful of films with very little room for variety, but there were some surprises last night worth discussing. The most interesting content was actually behind the scenes, where more than a few stars made their anger about. the current political climate very apparent. There was also a strange moment with Leonardo DiCaprio, but instead of focusing on gossip – let’s talk about who won what.
Strangely, One Battle After Another was entered into the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category, which it actually won. The film definitely had funny moments but didn’t necessarily seem like a comedy, although other entries in this category did also not fit the general definition of the genre. ‘OBAA’ additionally brought home the Best Director – Motion Picture and Best Screenplay – Motion Picture titles for Paul Thomas Anderson. The film also won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for Teyana Taylor’s performance.

In the Best Picture – Drama category, Hamnet brought home the gold, beating out the favored Sinners which makes the Oscar race look unclear. Hamnet also won the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for its female lead Jessie Buckley. KPop Demon Hunters won the award for best Motion Picture – Animated, and also won for Best Song, neither of which was a surprise. Just like the Critic’s Choice Awards, the movie Secret Agent brought home the title for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language as well as the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for it’s leading man Wagner Moura.
In the Best Male Actor — Motion Picture — Musical/Comedy category, Timothée Chalomet once again beat out DiCpario as well as some high profile leading me nto take home the trophy. For the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture award, critically acclaimed foreign film Sentimental Value got the win for the performance by Hollywood veteran Stellan Skarsgård. Sinners of course did not go home winless, as the film managed to snag the Best Original Score – Motion Picture for longtime Coogler collaborator Ludwig Göransson as well as the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award.

On the TV side, it was no surprise that The Pitt won Best Television Series – Drama. The season 2 premiere last week likely only boosted an already red hot show that is destined to win lots of awards this year. The Studio also continues to win with another major award in theBest Television Series – Musical or Comedy category. In a mirror of the CCA’s, Adolescence went home with the Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television award.
Rhea Seehorn walked away with the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Drama for her work on the apocalyptic Pluribus series from Apple TV+. The TV acting awards mostly ran concurrently with the Crtic’s Choice Awards, with the notable exception being the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television, who selected Michelle Williams for the win for her work on the series Dying For Sex.

For Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, the comedy special Ricky Gervais: Mortality was the winner while the first ever Best Podcast award went to Amy Poehler for her series Good Hang with Amy Poehler.
The movie side of the slate definitely had more surprises, while the TV nominees and winners were pretty predictable.
